Building Relationships Through Email with Tanya Brody

Name: Tanya Brody

đź“Ť Ventura, CA

I help small and medium-size business owners harness the power of email marketing to build a relationship with their subscribers and customers and make more sales. I also work with select clients one-on-one as a direct response copywriter, strategist and email marketing consultant. When I'm not coaching business owners on their email marketing, you can find me out swing dancing, walking on the beach, or puttering in my garden.

What moment or experience inspired you to start your business? What was your vision at the beginning?

I was working with a marketing technology company and I saw how many businesses were leaving money on the table by failing to follow up with all of the people on their email lists. They would grow these huge lists, then ignore them until they wanted to sell something. Then, when they did send emails for a launch or to sell a product, they'd wonder why no one bought and why so many people unsubscribed. I saw a need, teaching business owners how to build a relationship with their subscribers through nurture emails, and that became my mission.

What does a typical day for you look like?

I am a former musician, so I'm a night owl by nature. I tend to start work a bit later than most after a relaxing morning, then get straight into whatever needs to be done that day. I love what I do, so working is always fun for me. I usually alternate work on my own business with client work throughout the day, as needed.

What unique routines or habits do you believe contribute to your success?

The beach is my happy place. I live 10 minutes away from the Pacific ocean, so I try to get down there at least once a week for a meditative walk along the water. I love Pomodoro sessions, as they make it easier for me to focus. And having fun is a requirement for me!

What's your workstation setup?

I have a laptop, connected to an external monitor, with a wireless keyboard and mouse. My desk is next to a window in my office, so I get lots of light throughout the day and I have a bird feeder sitting right where I can watch the birds as I ponder the perfect words to craft the next sentence. Oh, and a cat bed for the cats. (Very important.)

Where do you go to look for inspiration?

The ocean. The beach is my happy place.

What core values drive your business, and how have they shaped your path?

That I'm in business to serve my people. When I focus on serving, everything falls into place and the money follows naturally. Plus, I have more fun.

What part of your business are you most proud of?

I'm probably most proud of my Email Writing Accountability Group. It's a group of business owners that get together once a week and write our emails. Then we review them together, so we all get feedback. Then we incorporate that feedback into our emails. It's so inspiring to see all of these business owners growing their own businesses and their relationships with their subscribers. And I love our copy review sessions.

What’s a challenge you’re currently working on in your business?

My current challenge is making more people aware of nurturing their email subscribers and why it matters to their businesses. It's really all about getting exposure to new audiences for me.

What music do you listen to while working?

Lots of different genres, but I prefer instrumental when I'm working because otherwise the words accidentally show up in whatever I'm writing.

What’s one piece of advice someone gave you that you’ll never forget?

Don't fall in love with your product, fall in love with the problem you help people solve.
